Norrköping Symphony Orchestra

A special place in the region's cultural life, an international reputation, a rich history and a bold future.

The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra has the reputation of being one of the most exciting orchestras in Scandinavia. German conductor Karl-Heinz Steffens is Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor since the season of 2020-2021. Norrköping Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1912 and is today comprised of 85 musicians. Through its long and rich history it maintains a special place in the region’s cultural life. The orchestra’s main repertoire consists of the great romantic era composers from Beethoven to Mahler but it is just as important to perform 20th century music and Swedish/Nordic music. The orchestra’s two principal venues are The Louis De Geer Concert Hall in Norrköping, and the Crusell Concert Hall in Linköping.

Did you know that students can attend our classical concerts for the favorable student price of SEK 75*? Classical music is everywhere in our daily life. But it's something special to hear it live with a big orchestra. You will find us just 5 minutes from the university, in the middle of town in our beautiful concert hall in Norrköping. Welcome to De Geerhallen in Norrköping and Crusellhallen in Linköping. We play everything from classical concerts with Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Mahler to popular concerts with renowned Swedish artists. You can buy tickets online. Go to the concert you are interested in, and click on “Köp biljett” which leads to the ticket booking. Remember to have a valid student ID with you. *A few times a year we have popular concerts with slightly higher ticket prices.

Recordings

The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra has an extensive repertoire recorded on cd. You can stream several of the recordings via Spotify.

Current recording projects are The Allan Pettersson Project, and the new project focusing on Nordic composers.   

The Allan Pettersson Project started in 2013.In association with conductor Christian Lindberg and BIS Records, the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra aim to perform and record all symphonies and other major works by the Swedish composer Allan Pettersson.  

In 2023 we have initiated a new project with chief conductor Karl-Heinz Steffens, focusing on Nordic composers, starting with Symphony no. 1 and no. 2 by Norwegian composer Christian Sinding. 

The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra was the first orchestra ever to win two Swedish Grammys in two different categories: one for Pettersson's Ninth Symphony and one for the album Hommage with Sven-Bertil Taube. We were also nominated in the category "Children's Album of the Year" with Ayla Kabaca and 12 songs about the months. Since then, the orchestra has been nominated for Grammys several years in a row. 

In 2018, the recording of the House of Cards Symphony was released, with music from the famous TV series. In 2019, Johan Dalene debuted on cd with Tchaikovsky's and Barber's violin concertos together with Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. In the same year, the album TRAUMA was released with Grammy-nominated artist Jenny Wilson. 

In 2021, BIS Records released an album featuring Norrköping Symphony Orchestra's harpist Delphine Constantin-Reznik. It is the first cd recording of the recently rediscovered romantic Swedish harpist and composer Anton Edvard Pratté (1796-1875). The album also includes his grand concerto for harp with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Daniela Musca.

Organization

Scenkonst Öst was formed on January 1, 2016. The company consists of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra (SON) and Östgötateatern with ung scen/öst, both iconic institutions with long history.

The overall assignment for Scenkonst Öst is to deliver performing arts of high artistic quality and breadth for all ages and to ensure the long-term high quality of the performing arts and other culture in the region. The owners' objectives are also that Scenkonst Öst will work to ensure that culture reaches more people and thereby contribute to strengthening the county's attractiveness.

Scenkonst Öst AB is owned by Region Östergötland together with Norrköping and Linköping municipalities. CEO is Pia Kronqvist, theater director is Nils Poletti and artistic director of SON is Henrik Marmén.

Scenkonst Öst, with its wide range of programs, attracts visitors both inside and outside the region. High-profile tours, exciting public activities, award-winning recordings, unique studio and workshop production contributes to the national and international marketing of the county.
